Legends Dance Show 2010, Webster Theatre, Arbroath, Wed 31 March

Staged by Monifieth High, this one night annual celebration of a broad range of dance styles, was buzzing with energy, enthusiasm and high spirits from the off. It was a good idea to theme it around legendary musical artistes, including Elvis, Queen, Michael Jackson, the Beatles and Bon Jovi, as there was something to appeal to almost everyone. The cast of over 100 young people were clearly having a great time and their sense of fun was both infectious and highly entertaining. The majority of the audience seemed to be family, friends and fellow pupils, but it’s a fantastic night out for anyone who enjoys popular music and dance. It was also good to see Highland dancing given such a contemporary twist.

All in all, it was amazing value at just £5 per ticket and I’ll certainly be booking for next year. Just a couple of final thoughts – the solo male participant was a wonderful dancer, but the show would have benefited from better gender balance. So I have a message for the many young lads who were in the audience or helped out as ushers. Come on! Give the girls some competition next year and show the world that Monifieth High is not an all girl school. Also, some of the transitions between themes were a bit clunky and could do with smoothing out a bit – but overall, a fabulous night and well done all!
