The Elves and the Shoemakers, Dundee Rep

Currently showing at the Dundee Rep until the 10th of April is the classic tale of the Elves and the Shoemakers.

When a friend and I were invited to take in the show, we were a little unsure that we fitted the target age range. However as we don’t have any bloggers aged under 10, we rather awkwardly went along.

Maybe it was the big kid in us or maybe it was the fact that this show truly is for family members of all ages, but whatever the reason, we were quickly captivated by the performance.

The standard layout of the theatre has been changed to a more intimate format whereby all the members of the audience sit around a revolving stage. This is great for the kids (and the big kids) as they are able to see everything that is happening, and as the show is 50 minutes long you don’t have to worry about short attention spans drifting elsewhere. This timing is possible because the set has been expertly designed, so that with clever lighting effects it requires no modification throughout.

This is therefore 50 minutes of non-stop entertainment for the kids that has them laughing and joining in throughout. All of the performers are brilliant, and their parts played perfectly. As you are so close they are able to pick out individuals in the crowd which adds to the atmosphere. Humour comes in the most part from the elves due to all their twittering, and with some clever phrasing there are plenty of laughs for adults as well.

At £5-£10 per ticket it is good value and if you want to make more of a day from it, you can spend £20 which gets you a full ticket and a two course meal in the Rep Theatre Restaurant.

If you have got young kids then this is a must see, or if in fact you are just a big kid like my friend and I, you won’t be disappointed.
