Shezhad Indian Restaurant, Castle Street, Dundee
Right in the city centre, this restaurant is popular with locals and
has a steady flow of customers for both the buffet and a la carte menus. We arrived for our 7 o’clock Saturday night reservation and were taken to our table promptly by one of the friendly waiters. The buffet had just finished and the Saturday night Tandoori Special menu offering a choice of 2 courses for a very reasonable £10.45 had just started, but we decided to opt for the full choice menu.
We started with the old favourite of poppadoms and onion chutney. It was a good start because it arrived almost instantly and the bowl of onion chutney was large and generous. We both commented that there was more chutney than we’ve previously had in many other Indian restaurants for two couples – so well done the Shezhad for not making that common mistake.
Our main courses of King Prawn Bhuna and Vegetable Dhansaak were delicious and filling and more than hit the spot. The Dhansaak had more chillies in it than I’ve had elsewhere and was definitely not for the faint hearted, but delicious nonetheless. By the time we downed the rice and chapatis we had no space left for desserts, but the milky coffees and mint chocolates finished the meal off nicely.
Customer service at the Shezhad is warm and friendly, striking just the right balance between being attentive and letting diners get on with enjoying their evening. The atmosphere on Saturday was both buzzy and busy – just what you need to get that weekend night out feeling. And I really liked that we were not rushed away when we sat and chatted for a while after finishing our meal.
Two courses, drinks and coffees came to just £32 for two, which is terrific value for money. It’s not posh and it’s not pretentious. It’s just good, tasty food in comfortable city centre surroundings served by staff who seem really pleased you came in by. An ideal place to eat before or after a show at the Caird Hall and we’ll certainly be back!
